It was very big news here in Estonia, when E-Bay bought the Skype. The main programmers are all estonians, the office where they are located is quite nearby where i live.
All the newspapers were excited that our quite small country had immediatelly several new millionairs.
BTW, for some odd reason Skype is prohibited in some corporate intranets. I know, that one reason is, that the protocol is not public and some admins are worried if it contains something .... bad...
At one time a city in the valley I live in was talking about bringing a similar product city wide and they faced opposition. Don't know what happened there.
I remember using voice on MSN IM a long time ago and it was terrible.
Skype was formed by a Swede and a Dane. They recently sold of zillions of dollars.
We use it a lot, my wife is from Mexico and for 10 euros we get about 500 minutes to regular phones. We also have lots of friends who also have Skype and we talk to them for free. The quality is great, the software is easy to use.
I would recommend it. No doubt about that. It has saved us a lot of money.
